Working as a GP she saw patients who might present unwell with a chest infection, for example on a Thursday, who she would like someone to review 48 hours later to make sure they were starting to improve. But regular GP hours are 0800-1830 Monday- Friday meaning the only option was to ask the patient to seek help if they felt worse or no better, from out of hours or the Emergency Department. Which are good options, in that there are health professionals on hand to help. But not really the right place, the Emergency Department should be dealing with life threatening emergencies and ideally out of hours with unscheduled care. So what if, Dr Robins thought, I could see my patient at 1600 on Thursday evening and book them in for a review with a health professional at 1600 on Saturday to be checked over? What if……
And so SPCL began. Initially opening appointments in the evenings and weekends. So the Thursday afternoon chest infection could be reviewed on Saturday. Those who worked could book their asthma review without needing to take annual leave. The child who was well all year round but chose the bank holiday weekend to develop a fever and breathing difficulties, could be seen quickly and locally.
Things have developed, as you will see from the website. Multiple health professionals now work for SPCL, providing many different services from the emergency contraceptive coil being fitted, to dementia reviews in care homes, supporting the vulnerable with literacy, financial or housing concerns. The services are multi-faceted and our team are brilliant at responding to the needs of the local population. None of this can be delivered without an incredible support team behind the scenes. On occasion roles to work with us will become available and we will advertise these on the site.
“I have really enjoyed being part of the team that helped to build and grow SPCL to what it is today. I love the fact the team are able to support the healthcare system and patients within Southampton.
I have worked for SPCL since its formation in 2015. Starting as PA to the Chief Operating Officer and now working as part of the Senior Management Team. My role has been varied, allowing me to grow and gain experience along with the organisation.
In my spare time I enjoy creating handmade cards, family time and supporting my son in his career as an elite gymnast competing for Great Britain”.
