Testosterone is an important hormone for many women. A low dose can be beneficial at improving concentration, motivation, energy and libido.
There are no licenced testosterone products for women in the UK despite plenty of evidence showing testosterone can be both safe and effective.
Clinicians follow national guidelines, called NICE guidance, and these state that testosterone can be considered for those women who need it.
It can be prescribed on the NHS if the prescriber is familiar with it and is willing to prescribe it ‘off licence’. Some doctors prefer not to take this decision themselves and will refer on to a specialist for advice before prescribing. In some areas there are prescribing restrictions in place which means GPs and other prescribers, are not able to offer it to women.
In those who are prescribed testosterone an initial blood test is required 4 months after starting and every 12 months thereafter.
