The cervical screening programme is just that, a screening programme for those with no symptoms. To find, through opportunistic testing, those at risk of developing cervical cancer.
It is not for those with symptoms – abnormal bleeding patterns for example mid cycle, following intercourse, or after the menopause: all need to be investigated.
Don’t wait for your smear if you experience these, seek medical advice as a matter of urgency.
